Have you ever wondered what sort of flowers would be best for the season you want to have your wedding in? Do flowers even have seasons? Well friends, lucky for you I have teamed up with an amazing lady from Adventure Floral to bring you a 3 part series all about wedding flowers & to shed some light for our eloping couples as well! YES you can have beautiful flowers for your elopement!! As elopement photographers and guides it is our job to help our couples plan the most epic adventure for their special day and really, who doesn't love a beautiful bouquet of flowers on any given day, let alone their wedding day!!
When I asked Chelsea to shed some light on the best wedding flowers to have in which season this this what she said;
"Flowers definitely have their seasons! Have you ever noticed in your garden that flowering bushes and trees can change depending on the season we are in? Knowing the types of flowers you love and when they bloom may even help you decide on when your wedding will be. Although there are many variety of flowers for each season, I’ve gone ahead and listed the flowers of each season I love working with below; but first! Another question I get asked all to often..
Q: What sort of greens go with flowers? Does it really matter?
I am so glad you asked! This can get tricky, because I love to mix up my foliage for texture, but you also want to have some consistency in color and the overall look you are going for. Another thing to note is what greens need to drink lots and what greens are going to compliment your flowers. For example, you may not want to pair tropical birds of paradise flowers with evergreen clippings. 1. Your evergreen clippings are going to soak up all your water immediately and leave none for your birds of paradise. And 2. With one being a tropical plant and the other being a coniferous they just won't compliment each other!
When choosing foliage for a romantic look, I like to keep my options soft and airy so I usually choose a silver dollar eucalyptus or dusty miller to compliment my neutral flower choices. If I am creating a bohemian styled bouquet, with a protea as my focal point, I would choose a more vibrant green foliage to contrast my flowers. For example, I would probably choose nagi, Italian ruscus, plumosa or tree fern!
Here are some of my favorite wedding and event floral based on the season!
Seasonal Spring Flowers:
Flowers - Tulips, Poppies, Narcissus, Ranunculus, Anemone, and Peonies
Greens - Honeysuckle, Spirea, Eucalyptus
Seasonal Summer Flowers:
Flowers - Peonies, Alstroemeria, Roses, Zinnias, Sunflowers
Greens - Oregeno, Buplerum, Eucalyptus
Seasonal Fall Flowers:
Flowers - Sunflowers, Dahlia, Black- eyed Susan, Asters, Chrysanthemum
Greens - Hypericum, Amaranth, Eucalyptus
Seasonal Winter Flowers:
Flowers - Amaryllis, Poinsettia, White Ranunculus, Hellebore
Greens - Eucalyptus, Lambs Ear, Pine
